A General Overview

The reasons why people collect in any field are many and varied and in our case the trigger was probably the item Ref no. 393/4, under the foreign section. This I remember as a child in 1947 but had totally forgotten until clearing my father’s personal momentoes following his death at the end of 1959. Clearly it meant a great deal to him as he kept it with his medals and other war momentoes, which in turn I then kept. Things did not come together until 1976 when we moved into our period house in Norwich and started looking for furniture for it. Auctions were common in Norfolk at that time and we were used to going to them and spoon collecting was rather accidental, the rest is history.

The Collection has been formed over some twenty-five years. Its sources have been all the usual ones, Auction, the trade, private and widely throughout the British Isles. Some examples have cost little or nothing others have been the result of competitive bidding at auction which has often involved a higher price than intended.
